Los Angeles-based punk rock quartet X were one of those bands that made music critics drool superlatives. Their first two albums, 1980’s Los Angeles and 1981’s Wild Gift, were greeted with ecstatic praise. The ardor died somewhat with 1982’s Under the Big Black Sun and 1983’s More Fun in the New World, as the band started to escape from their punk-rock identity and reveal more country-style roots, which became more obvious as time went on.
The original lineup of vocalist Exene Cervenka, guitarist Bill Zoom, bassist/vocalist John Doe, and drummer DJ Bonebreak broke up following 1985’s Ain’t Love Grand when Zoom left. But those first four albums are still worshipped icons to many punk rock aficionados.
Now regrouped with the original lineup, X is doing something special in only four cities: they’re playing each of those albums in its entirely on subsequent nights Cleveland joins New York, Los Angeles and Chicago as one of the lucky cities where they’ll play these four shows, although Cleveland will have only three of the original four nights booked at the Music Box Supper Club.
Because the band will be doing a program at the Rock Hall on Tue 9/9, the night they were originally going to perform Los Angeles, they’ll do both that and Wild Gift on Wed 9/10. On Thu 9/11 they’ll play Under the Big Black Sun, and on Fri 9/12 they’ll do More Fun in the New World.
They’re bringing additional musicians to help recreate the sound they got in the studio, and each night, they’ll be performing other X favorites to round out the shows.
Tickets for each night are $35 in advance, $40 at the door.
