If you were hanging out in the Cleveland music scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s — an exceptionally fertile time for local music — you surely remember the Janglers, proponents of what we now call Americana, with a streak of jam band in them.
The group was led by singer/guitarist/songwriter Jason White. After the band ran its course in the mid ’90s, White moved to Nashville to focus on a solo career, including songwriting. That led to his lucky break: country superstar Tim McGraw covered his tune “Red Ragtop,” released it as a single, and had a hit with it.
The royalties from that song gave White the leisure to write, record, and tour on his own time. His latest album is the introspective 2011 The Longing. But he still comes back to Cleveland to play for his following here. He’ll perform two shows at Nighttown this week.
Tickets are $20.
