Heavy Metal Comeback Band Anvil Plays @ClevelandAgora

Sun 5/11 @ 7pm

Who couldn’t love and root for Anvil after seeing the 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil? The film follows the unlikely comeback of the also-ran Canadian metal band, formed in 1978, which saw many of the bands it shared bills with in the ’80s go on to massive success, while it languished.

Reduced to day jobs and occasional gigs in local sports bars in the ’90s, the band hung in there until the film made it a hot item again. The final scene — where the band takes the stage at a Japanese music festival in an early morning slot, expecting to find the hall empty, and instead taking the stage to a large, receptive crowd – is a tearjerker.

Since then, the band’s released a couple of additional records, including last year’s Hope in Hell. Its no-frills, non-trendy metal has worn well.

The group will be at the Agora with local metal band Eternal Legacy and hard rockers the Rick Ray Bandopening.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Moms get in free — because it’s Mothers Day.
