Jazz trumpeter Josh Rzepka, an Akron native, is a whirlwind. In less than five years, he’s released two jazz CDs of original music, another showing off his proficiency in classical music on pieces by Handel, Purcell, and Vivaldi.
Last year, he unleashed a truly ambitious project. Called Trumpet Genesis, the CD featured five other trumpet players in addition to himself: friends, inspirations, mentors, teachers. The rhythm section included some of the area’s top jazz musicians including pianists Jackie Warren and David Thomas, bassist Peter Dominguez, drummer Ron Godale, and percussionist Sammy DeLeon. He also assembled the group for several lives shows.
In case you missed them, Rzepka is now doing stripped-down version of Trumpet Genesis at Nighttown. Well, not THAT stripped down. So there’ll only be four trumpet players instead of six — himself, Kenny Davis, Scott McKee, and Joe Miller. Warren, Dominguez, Godale, and DeLeon will again make up the rhythm section.
Tickets are $20.
