Since 2002, Lakeland Community College in Mentor has been hosting what it now calls Free College Day. The intention is to reach out to community members make them more aware of what the school has to offer to people of all ages and education goals. More than 30 45-minute classes give attendees a chance to sample Lakeland’s offerings.
But there’s more. Early birds can join a nature walk at 8am, led by associate professor of biology Dr. Stephen Vieira, followed from 9-10:30am by a full breakfast of egg, toast, bacon and hash browns for only $2.50.
Classes run from 10 am-noon, followed by a free lunch and a free movie screening of A Place at the Table, a documentary about hunger and obesity in the U.S.
That’s part of this year’s theme “Food for Thought,” focusing on healthy living, nutrition, gardening and sustainability. Free BMI and blood pressure screenings will be offered, along with free chair massages. The school’s Teaching Learning Center and Campus Kids will offer workshops on gardening for families from 10am-1pm.
