The gypsy jazz bands just keep on coming. The infectious style, redolent of the 1930s, gives musicians a chance to display their chops while playing music that’s accessible and easy to like.
The latest such group to hit Nighttown — where you can often hear this style of music played — is Madison, Wisconsin’s Harmonious Wail. They’re not new, as many of the ensembles in this genre are not. They’ve been around more than two decades. But they’ve mostly played around their home area, so they’re new to many audiences.
The trio features mandolin player Sims Delaney-Potthoff, vocalist Maggie Delaney-Potthoff, and bassist Jeff Weiss. The combination of instruments, plus Maggie’s supple, swinging vocals, gives a distinctive, intimate, sometimes almost country-folk flavor to music usually associated with the guitar of Djgano Reinhardt and the violin of Stephane Grapelli.
Tickets are $15.
