@cim_edu Marks Composer Bernard Rands’ 80th Birthday

Wed 1/29 @ 8PM

The Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra takes the stage at Kulas Hall this week to play some music for listeners who like to step beyond the standard repertoire and hear what’s being done in classical music today.

It’ll include Timbres, espace, movement, a mid-’70s piece by French composer Henri Dutilleux, who died last year at the age of 97, and In Memory, a new piece by Keith Fitch, who heads the composition department a CIM. (He’s also the director of the New Music Ensemble.)

But the centerpiece of the evening will be two compositions by Bernard Rands, whose 80th birthday the concert will celebrate. The Orchestra will play his 2008 work, “chains like the sea” — Two Movements for Orchestra, and his 2011 piece Danza Petrificada.

Steven Smith will be the guest conductor.

The concert is free.
