The Modern Electric Close Their Year @GrogShop

Thu 12/26 @ 9PM

It was nearly six years ago now that a quartet from Willoughby, playing atmospheric, theatrical music they called “cinematic pop,” won the 2008 High School Rock Off.

Most High School Rock Off bands dissolve when the members head off to college. The Modern Electric is alive and thriving six years later, with three of the same four members — singer/keyboardist Garrett Komyati, drummer Michael O’Brien and bassist Matthew Children. They’ve been joined by Holden Laurence on guitar.

It’s been increasing the number of high-profile gigs it plays, attracting gaggles of avid young fans to gigs like the Weapons of Mass creation festival, a showcase on the plaza outside MOCA, and the Cellar Door Rendezvous at the Beachland Ballroom this year. And they’re currently working on a follow-up to their debut CD.

They’ll wrap the year headlining a show at the Grog Shop. Stripped-down rock trio the Moxies and bluesy Chardon singer-songwriter Tom Evanchuck open.

Admission is $10.
