Cincinnati’s Over the Rhine are in northeast Ohio so often they might as well be a local band.
The husband-and-wife duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist have been exploring their lives and their relationship in hauntingly beautiful music for nearly 25 years.
Back in the early/mid ’90s, when their sort of melodic folk-pop formed a strong counterpoint to the dominant grunge movement, they signed a major-label deal and released three albums.
Since then, what was once a full band has been pared down to the core duo (adding other musicians as needed), now living rural Highland County, Ohio, and release music on their own Great Speckled Dog label.
Their latest album, released earlier this year, is a double-set called Meet Me at the Edge of the World. It’s bucolic and pensive, redolent with the weight of history. It includes a track called “Cuyahoga,” but don’t expect their reflections on this area. It’s an instrumental.
They’re back at the Kent Stage, a mere two months after their last appearance there. See what I mean about them being virtually a local band?
This time they’ll be doing a special electric Christmas show, part of a mini-holiday tour around the Midwest. Matt the Electrician, an Austin, Texas-based singer-songwriter in the Guy Clark/Townes Van Zant tradition, is along for the ride.
Tickets are $20-$25.
