An Indie Paradise Steeped in Music and the Arts
When someone says “Akron,” the Goodyear blimp might be the iconic image that comes to mind. Cleveland’s southern arm, founded around rubber plants at the turn of the century, Akron is known for the Soap Box Derby, the University of Akron’s incredible Polymer program that includes the National Polymer Innovation Centers and attracts companies to the area, and Goodyear Tires.
Though it remains true to its history of innovation, science and manufacturing, like Cleveland, its big sister to the north, Akron is filled with points of cultural interest and rock ‘n roll.
Over the years, galleries, legendary music venues, indie boutiques and local eateries have made University Park and Downtown Akron a destination city. From quaint, old-fashioned diners and historical landmarks to big-time venues like Canal Park and E.J. Thomas Hall, there’s something for everyone in the rubber city.
