Akron’s Tuesday Musical series at the University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall kicks off its season this week with Minneapolis/St. Paul-based a cappella male vocal ensemble Cantus.
The group was founded in 1995 by music students at St. Olaf’s College and later became a professional nonprofit group that has seen many members cycle through from the nine-man ensemble over the years. It now tours year-round, augmenting its performance schedule with educational programs.
But what’s unique about it is that it is artist-led, with each new piece being assigned to a singer to direct. And its stylistic repertoire is broad, covering classical music, folk, spirituals, Christmas carols and art songs, among other genres.
Tickets are $25-$45.
