David Mayfield grew up in a musical family in Kent, Ohio, playing mandolin and guitar in his family’s bluegrass band. Later he played bass for his sister Jessica Lea Mayfield after she landed a record deal and began touring.
She’s returned the favor, appearing on his sophomore album, Good Man Down, released this past spring. It also features Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers, Dierks Bently, Doyle Lawson, and other guest stars, testifying to the relationships and respect Mayfield has accumulated over the years.
He raised the money to make the album in a Kickstarter campaign last year, going for $18,000 and getting twice that. Fans were rewarded with an album that sprang from his country/bluegrass roots, but ranged well beyond them, taking unsettling twists and turns.
Mayfield and his band the David Mayfield Parade will be at Musica.
Akron folk-rockers Bethesda, who are starting to make a big impact on the local music scene, open, along with the Angie Haze Project.
Tickets are $9.99.
