Black Squirrel Pride
Kent is a diverse neighborhood that still holds true to the attitude that made it famous. Locals are concerned with sustaining their community by supporting local businesses and artists, and maintaining and restoring historical sites for future generations.
Known as the home of Kent State University, Kent is an epicenter for learning and a Mecca for the Arts. Visitors can enjoy unique shopping and dining opportunities as well as a variety of live music in a friendly, small-town nostalgic atmosphere.
There is also beautiful scenery to be enjoyed in Kent. The city is home to over a dozen parks and preserves, and the Portage Hike and Bike Trail connects Kent to other towns in Portage and Summit Counties.
The Kent Heritage Festival is held every July in downtown Kent, which includes a 5k and 10k race as well as arts, crafts, fireworks, and live entertainment. Another great tradition in the area is The Black Squirrel Festival, which has taken place every fall for over thirty years, honors the urban legends of the unofficial mascots of the University and helps connect college students with the rich heritage of the community.
