Honorary Clevelander Southside Johnny at the Kent Stage

Sun 10/6 @ 8PM

Northeast Ohio is certainly Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes’ home away from home. Other than their native New Jersey, no market so completely embraced the band, following their 1976 debut I Don’t Want to Go Home. Back in their heyday, they even headlined Blossom Music Center.

The Jukes have seen a changing cast of musicians over the years backing singer Southside Johnny Lyon. But the sound has stayed within certain parameters, with a blazing horn section propelling the classic R&B they embraced long before it became trendy again. Kid Leo may be gone, but “Trapped Again” sounds as good as ever.

And Lyon still ranks as one of the best white soul singers ever. Though he’s 64 now, he doesn’t seem to have aged — perhaps because he looked and sounded like a weathered old R&B singer when he was in his 20s.

They’ll be at the Kent Stage this weekend, closing a trifecta of acts with special meaning to northeast Ohio music fans – following Glass Harp on Friday and In Hunter on Saturday.

Tickets are $36.
