Mike’s Barn is on the road again.
For nearly 20 years, Mike Yates ran the informal, rustic music facility near Elyria until he ran into some issues this year with the legality of the venue.
So he’s taking his shows elsewhere, looking for venues in the same area with a similar vibe.
So his concert with legendary British finger-style guitarist Adrian Legg is taking place at the Riverdog Gallery & Retreat in Wakeman west of Oberlin in the Vermilion River Valley. It’s a bucolic 20-acre park where the concert will take place in a century barn — or, if weather permits, the barn door will hold the stage while the audience sits outside in chairs under a canopy. It’ll be intimate — only 100 tickets sold.
Legg has built his career and reputation solely on his guitar-playing skills. He’s never used a band to establish his name. But in his 40-plus years career, he’s been a writer, a book author, a technician, an equipment designer, an educator, and a commentator on NPR’s All Things Considered, while releasing a string of solo albums and performing around the world, often with such well-known fellow guitarists as Richard Thompson, Eric Johnson, and Joe Satriani.
He doesn’t play in a specific genre. His performances are all about exploring the range of what a guitar can do.
Guitarist Todd Allen opens a 6, with Cleveland bluesman Austin Walkin’ Cane Charanghat performing at 6:30.
Tickets are $35.
You can come early and enjoy rambling around the grounds and checking out the gallery. It’s BYOB.
