VIDEO: Last Chance for Double Heart

By Susan Petrone

Sun 7/7 at 7pm is your last chance to check out Double Heart before it heads to the New York Fringe Festival.

Double Heart is an imagined prequel to Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing that envisions the early courtship of Beatrice and Benedick, providing a fascinating back story to Shakepeare’s timeless tale. Written in poetic verse, the play is a celebration of great characters and enthralling language.

Double Heart was written by Cleveland playwright David Hansen and originally commissioned and produced by Great Lakes Theater as an educational outreach tour that traveled to 23 sites across Northeast Ohio and was seen by an audience of more than 2,400. The members of the touring company believed in the production so much that they created a Kickstarter campaign to take it to the Fringe Festival.

Directed by Lisa Ortenzi, the performance features Cleveland actors David Hansen, Annie Hickey, Emily Pucell, and James Rankin. The design trio of Terry Martin, Esther Haberlen, and Richard Ingram rounds out the production team.

Cool Cleveland correspondent Susan Petrone talks with playwright David Hansen about the production.

Double Heart (The Courtship of Beatrice and Benedick) runs Sun 7/7 at 7pm @ Reinberger Auditorium, home to Talespinner Children’s Theater, 5209 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland. The show is free!
