The Breeders Celebrate Last Splash’s 20th Birthday With Reunion Tour

Thu 5/2 @10 PM

The Breeders are an important piece of rock and roll history — a key band in the mainstreaming of indie rock in the ’90s and how it brought women to the foreground.

The band was founded in 1990 by two women indie rockers — Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses — looking for an outlet outside the secondary roles they played in their other bands. Their 1993 album Last Splash and hit single “Cannonball” brought them widespread attention.

That was also the peak of their career. Donelly was already bowing out to focus on Belly, another group she’d formed, and Deal brought in her twin sister, Kelley, to play guitar until they ran out of steam. The band’s been an on-and-off thing since the mid-’90s, with different musicians participating.

This year, accompanying the reissue of Last Splash by the Breeders’ label 4AD, that era’s lineup — featuring the Deal sisters, bassist Josephine Wiggs, and drummer Jim MacPherson — has reunited for a tour that brings them to Oberlin College’s Dionysus Club.

Tickets are $20.
