Classical guitarist Gideon Whitehead graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music last year, moving on to Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute for graduate work. He’s started to carve out a little niche for himself as a specialist in Russian guitar music. Last summer he successfully funded a CD project on Kickstarter to record some of these Russian compositions for guitar.
In his proposal he said, “It is a means for me to introduce some really incredible music that has (as far as I can tell) been almost completely ignored by musicians outside of Russia. I know of only a few guitarists who are familiar with this repertoire and I know of absolutely no musicians outside of the guitar community who have ever heard of all but a couple of these composers.”
His program for this afternoon’s Music by Nature concert series at Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s Happy Days Lodge is devoted to Russian music. So his audience will have the rare chance to hear some of this obscure repertoire. The program is being presented in cooperation with the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society. Tickets are $10.
