PHOTOSTREAM: Fresh Thinking at Nature’s Bin Annual Meeting

Forgive me, but this luncheon always brings a tear to the eye.

Nature’s Bin green grocer, does so much more than provide organic, healthy produce and grocery items from their store in Lakewood.

Parent company Cornucopia uses that facility to train developmentally challenged individuals, offering them vocational training and a place to start their work careers, developing confidence and skills.

The Women’s Pavilion at Lakewood Park was the site for the Cornucopia annual meeting on Tue 3/19/13, and provided an opportunity for Executive Director Scott Duennes and board to make awards to staff for Distinguished Service, and for Outstanding Achievement to some of their clients who’ve passed through their training program on their way to career independence. Celebrating with the staff and their constituents were members of the community and Dru Siley, Lakewood’s Director of Planning and Development, who spoke offered his views on the major project that Cornucopia is about to complete.

After an 18-month search for room to expand their training and catering operations, the McDonald’s restaurant 300 feet away moved to a new location, taking over the property where the Detroit Theatre once stood. This new facility has been “de-arched” and is in the process of being totally redesigned to offer Cornucopia ten times the space they currently use for training. The new Vocational Training Center will open in 2013.

And the lunch, served by Nature’s Bin professional catering operation, is always a highlight: delicious and healthy.
