Techn!color was one of 18 bands out of the original 63 entrants who qualified for this year’s High School Rock Off Final Exam February 9. They didn’t win, but they’re ahead of most of their competitors in one way: they’ve already played “real” gigs. They’ve played the Grog Shop and they’ve got a show at Lakewood’s Winchester Music Hall this weekend.
The quartet is fronted by vocalist Lillian Sindelar, who’s got the chutzpah to tackle soulful tunes by Aretha Franklin, Adele, and Otis Redding, and even such mature tunes as Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” popularized by the late Jeff Buckley. She and her Shaker Heights High School classmates — guitarist Shane McKeon, bassist Arman Gerami, and drummer Michael Miller — have only been together a little over a year, and don’t have much of their own material yet. But their blend of classic and neo soul with music by contemporary artists like John Mayer, Kings of Leon, Coldplay, and the Black Keys gives them the raw material to create their own sound. Tickets are $6.
