Bosnian Rainbows at Grog Shop

Mon 2/25 @ 8:30pm

Bosnian Rainbows is actually from Texas, the spawn of former Mars Volta members Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Deantoni Parks, Le Butcherettes vocalist Terry Gender Bender (nee Suarez), and keyboard player Nicci Kasper. The group launched last year after the Mars Volta went “on hiatus,” when Rodriguez-Lopez jettisoned the idea of doing a solo tour for a new band situation.

Rodriguez-Lopez has said that while Bosnian Rainbows shares the wide-ranging progressive influences that were a hallmark of the Mars Volta, they use them more succinctly. That’s certainly true of “Torn Maps,” one of two songs the band has posted online.

The other, called ‘Turtle Neck,” is a sprawling six-and-a-half-minute journey that moves from a dreamy, melodic front section into a nervy-jangling guitar break before going soft again — roughly following the trajectory of “Stairway to Heaven.” Bosnian Rainbows is at the Grog Shop with Marriages opening. Tickets are $15.
