2013 Rock Hall Inductees Named: Rush! Public Enemy! Heart! Albert King! Randy Newman! Donna Summer!

Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, announced the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees at the site of the 2013 Rock Hall Induction ceremonies, the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The Rock Hall inductions generate approximately $13-20 million of local economic activity to the host city each year.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland presents it’s annual induction ceremony every three years at Cleveland’s Public Hall, and on the off years in New York at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. This will be the first time the inductions will take place on the West Coast since 1993. The ceremony will take place on Thu 4/18/13, and tix go on sale Fri 1/25/13 at RockHall.com.

Watch Cool Cleveland’s recent video interview with Greg Harris, who takes over as the Rock Hall’s President and CEO on January 1, 2013. View the video  here.

Earlier today, Flea announced the 2013 inductees in the Performer Category:

  • Heart
  • Albert King
  • Randy Newman
  • Public Enemy
  • Rush
  • Donna Summer

And in the non-performer category, the winners of the Ahmet Ertegun award are Lou Adler and Quincy Jones.

Nominees for 2013 who were not inducted included long-time favorites such as Deep Purple, Joan Jett and Kraftwerk, ensuring that plenty of healthy controversy is sure to follow next year’s nominating process. A cadre of 500 artists, music historians and members of the industry vote on the inductees. To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. The 2013 Nominees had to release their first recording no later than 1987.

The 2013 induction ceremony will broadcast on HBO on Sat 5/18/13 at 9pm ET/PT. Said Michael Lombardo, President of HBO Programming, “We are excited to team up once again with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for what is sure to be an incredible evening of one-of-a-kind performances.”

For the first time in its history, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame offered fans the opportunity to officially participate in the induction selection process.  The public was able to visit rockhall.comhbo.comCNN.com and rollingstone.com to cast votes for who they believe to be most deserving of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The top five artists, as selected by the public, comprised a “fans’ ballot” that was tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2013 inductees.

I would be really interested in seeing the result of the public vote. I don’t understand how so many in the music industry and the public can have such a gap in their views of who is an appropriate inductee to the Rock Hall unless the gap isn’t as large as we think and it only appears that way because those that are disappointed in selections are the ones speaking out. I understand the value of rock influence and how artists from genre’s outside of rock can be inducted based on that premise. However, the days of outside genre’s influencing rock were early on, then rock evolved into many different styles and they influenced each other, keeping rock and roll “rock and roll”. Disco, and a disco artist such as Donna Summer, is a legendary performer and she has her place in MUSIC history. She went on to influence many POP and R&B artists that emerged after. But then you look at Joan Jett, the leader f the first female ROCK group who played instruments, wrote their own songs, and had a direct influence on future rockers – female of course but even males. They attributed their influences to earlier rock n roll artists such as The Beatles, David Bowie…. rock, rock and more rock. The issue I and so many others over the years have had is not the inclusion of other artists, but the inclusion of them at the expense of others. To induct Donna Summer into the Rock Hall BEFORE Joan Jett, or Deep Purple is flat out disrespectful to the genre and those artists.

To paraphase a comment I once read regarding the selection of inductees, putting rap and disco artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is like putting football players in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
