VIDEO: DJ Rob Sherwood at Aquilon Reunion

DJ Rob Sherwood is on a mission.

Every Thanksgiving Eve, he plans to re-visit the chronology of the coolest clubs and dance spots of his illustrious career, even if he has to re-create them himself. In 2011, it was the Nine of Clubs.

For 2012, he wanted to use the same iconic venue in the heart of Cleveland’s Flats where Cleveland’s most respected dance club existed. The building, next door to the historic Flat Iron Cafe, and sporting some of the best views of the Detroit-Superior Bridge and the industrial Flats, had been vacant for decades.

But this year, he brought back Aquilon, one of the Midwest’s, if not the country’s edgiest and influential clubs of the late 1980’s and early ’90’s. He would know. His DJing took him to NYC and around the country, and he is re-evaluating his own opinion of his hometown roots.

“I don’t think I realized at the time how important this club was.” Listen to the video interview at the reunion on 11.21.12 here.

As Aquilon morphed into The Smart Bar, The Whiskey, The Lift, music morphed from Alternative to House to Rave, and this seminal hotspot was right there, leading the way. Listen to this interview and a view of the action on the dance floor.
