Cool Cleveland ENDORSEMENT:
NO on State Issue #1 to call a convention to revise the Ohio Constitution.
Every 20 years, the Ohio constitution dictates that voters be asked whether the want to see a convention to revise the Ohio constitution itself. For the past 80 years, Ohio voters have said, “No thanks.” And they should do the same this year.
We already have a Modernization Commission in place to deal with the evolution of our most precious document. Two-thirds of this commission’s panel must recommend any changes to the Ohio legislature, which would require three-fifths of each of its chambers’ approval before any change goes to the voters. That will ensure that radical measures aren’t introduced. We don’t need to start over with the blank canvas of a constitutional convention.
We urge a “NO” vote on Issue 1.
