Art can be a powerful tool, even in the hands of kids.
Have a look at this cool comic novel by fifth graders Joshua Harris, Terry Johnson, Christopher Parker, Cullen Williams-Freeman of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Euclid, Ohio, which won a Blue Ribbon and Best of Show in the EXPLORERS series, a program of the Cleveland Clinic’s Office of Civic Education Initiatives. Congrats to the students and their teacher, Laura Ohlemacher.
This stunning entry, along with other winners, is on exhibit at the Great Lakes Science Center through the middle of August 2012.
The Clinic hosted 41 health education sessions with 2,200 students across Northeast Ohio in January, and 450 of these students responded by creating works of art. An esteemed panel of judges gave awards, and everyone wins.
The short graphic novel LegenDairy was created after the quartet from Thomas Jefferson Elementary heard about the four food groups from a Clinic nutritionist. They created four food group superheroes (dairy, grain, vegetable and fruit), who must work together and combine their powers to bring the human from inside the Junk Food Giant back to the Healthy Side. They were all interested in graphic novels, so they chose that genre to work in. Check out the complete comic masterpiece here.
