Hairspray: Regional Debut at Beck Center

Regional Debut of Hairspray at Beck Center

The Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood is becoming known for being the first in the region to present local premieres of major musicals and theatrical events. The just announced 2011/12 season will showcase the local premiere of the groundbreaking and award winning musical, “Spring Awakening,” with acclaimed Baldwin-Wallace College director Victoria Bussert, and Cleveland playwright Eric Coble’s play “The Velocity of Autumn” will open in New York soon, but not before the Beck presents the work in their Studio Theatre later this season, featuring grand dame Dorothy Silver.

On the boards now is the first locally produced professional production of the Tony-Award winning musical “Hairspray,” with one of those Tonys going to Cleveland native Mark O’Donnell, who is also in town to kick off Connect To Beck, the Beck Center’s young professionals group. The show, based on the John Waters film, is directed by Artistic Director Scott Spence and features a dream team of local collaborators: choreographer Martin Cespedes, musical director Larry Goodpaster, lighting designer Trad A Burns and more, and runs through Sun 8/14 on the Mackey Main Stage.

Tickets, while going fast, are still available at http://www.BeckCenter.org or by calling 216-521-2540 X10.
