Is Lakewood attempting to change for the worse? Some new developments in the works aren’t making residents happy. Not only is a block of mixed-use retail being destroyed for a new CVS store, McDonald’s is talking about bulding a new store on Detroit — where the iconic Detroit Theater is. What’s going on here?
From local writer/biker/artist Michael Gill’s blog Gyroscopethattakesyouplace:
“It’s as if history has a big red target on it in Lakewood. Three significant development proposals in the city so far this year have targeted buildings that have some iconic quality about them—each one a piece of the heritage and physical character that make the city attractive.
“All to be demolished. Buildings that are not dilapidated. Buildings that have great possibilities for re-use. And all the while, comparable and truly ruinous properties–even vacant land–lie fallow nearby.”

What a shame to tear down these building! I love Lakewood, it is so eclectic! Look at the theatre district downtown, developers at one time wanted to knock down the theatres and now look at them. They are beautiful buildings on the inside.
Come on, how many more drugstores do we need???
