Vote for a 15-year-old beekeeper

Nicole Shimandle isn’t your average teenager. She’s a 15-year-old beekeeper who’s taken care of bees since she was nine. She has hives at five local orchards and four in her own yard. She even teaches others about beekeeping. Now she needs your help. Her project is up for a Pepsi Refresh grant and could use a few more votes.

Her mission:

I plan to put up 15 hives on neighborhood farms and orchards. I plan to equip a honey house to help educate the public about honey bees and their role in pollination. The honey house is where we remove honey from the comb and filter it for bottling. I will make the honey house available to local schools and community groups to be able to teach about the honey bees and their roll in our food production. For me this is not a short term project. I want to be able to continue teaching about honey bees and see them removed from the endangered species list.
