The Four Seasons in Chinese Music, Poetry & Painting

Thu 7/22 @ 7PM

The Chinese Music Ensemble presents a multimedia celebration of the seasons on Thu 7/22. What’s it all about? Read on…

A multimedia presentation by the six-member Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble, pairing traditional Chinese melodies with readings (in both Chinese and English) of Chinese poems from the Tang and Song dynasties, as well as a display of traditional watercolor paintings by ensemble member Demi Zhang, showing the close interrelationship between these three art forms.  Based on the theme of the four seasons, represented by the so-called “Four Gentlemen” of Chinese culture:  bamboo, chrysanthemum, plum blossom, and orchid, the selections will also illustrate the strong influence of nature on the traditional Chinese arts.

The ensemble’s instruments for this performance will include dizi and xiao (bamboo flutes), houguan and suona (oboes), sheng (mouth organ), yehu (coconut fiddle), dahu (bass fiddle), pipa (pear-shaped lute), guzheng (zither), and percussion.  The program includes pieces from Shaanxi, Hebei, Shanghai, Chaozhou, and Guangdong, and the group will be joined for two songs (“Lan Hua-Hua” and “Si Ji Ge”) by classically trained vocalist Xue Yu of Shandong, China.

Event is free but you’re encouraged to register. Do so by calling 330-688-3295 or by stopping into the Stow library.
