Trendy, Hip, Artsy and Growing

If you ask an Akron native what’s cool in Akron, Highland Square is likely to be one of the first places mentioned. A primarily residential neighborhood, Highland Square is built along “old Medina Road” (now called West Market Street), one of the first modern roads built in the area. Today, the intersection of Highland and West Market is filled with shops, studios, restaurants, bars and other up-and-coming businesses. From galleries and old-style pizza parlors to clothing boutiques and specialty shops, the street is alive with visitors throughout the days and evenings.

One of the biggest events in Highland Square is “Art in the Square,” a festival with more than 150 artists from Highland Square, the Akron area and the region.

Music is a big part of Highland Square. Not only is Square Records (learn more below) hosting live performances and offering great new and used records to customers coming from around the region, some famous artists have grown up in Highland Square. The most notable current group with roots in Highland Square is The Black Keys, whose album covers are featured on the counter at Square Records.

On a typical day in Highland Square, a visitor can take in a movie, enjoy a great meal, get their shop on and much, much more. In fact, there’s so much to do in Highland Square, that you should start planning your trip right away!
