It should be apparent to any reasonably alert person that journalism failed Americans in a big way in the last presidential election, and that of all elections not to fall back on its usual obsession with polls, money and gaffes, this was one where it desperately needed to happen. So we’re seeing a lot of forums such as “Journalism and the Press in Challenging Times,” at First Unitarian Church of Cleveland in Shaker Heights, where the featured speaker will be Plain Dealer editor George Rodrigue.
He will address issues such as “How is journalism changing as a result of the election? How powerful are alternative news sources? What changes are in store at the PD?” And maybe even “Is it reasonable to allocate half our resources and space to sports?”
Knowing Unitarians, the coffee-fueled discussion should be very lively and journalism will not get off the hook for delivering the election to Trump on a silver platter. It’s free and open to all, just as the Unitarian Church is.
