Cincinnati attorney and former candidate for attorney general David Pepper took over as chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party at the beginning of 2015when the ODP revamped following a disastrous election cycle. While tasked with rebuilding the party he also found time to write his first novel, The People’s House.

Given the propensity of some on the left to buy into extravagant conspiracy theories about stolen elections — no, no one is hacking into touchscreen machines and adjusting vote totals; do you really think Republicans would work so hard to prevent people from voting if they could do THAT? — he probably isn’t doing them any favors with his story of shady political intrigue.

In his book a political reporter stumbles on “irregularities” in a congressional district he covers and “discovers an international plot — one that strikes at the heart of American democracy by taking advantage of weaknesses in today’s political architecture.” In the process he learns that a Russian energy oligarch is behind it and a presidential candidate knew all about it.

Wait — is this a novel or a nonfiction book about the recent presidential election? You can ask Pepper when he comes to Learned Owl books in Hudson to sign books and chat with readers. It’s free. For information go to learnedowl.com or call 330-653-2252.
