Jazz clarinetist Eddie Daniels has been burnishing his reputation for half a century. It was 50 years ago when he joined the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra as a tenor sax player, touring Europe and getting noticed. But when he caught the ear of Downbeat for a clarinet solo he did with the group, winning their International Critics New Star on Clarinet Award, he found himself drawn back to the instrument on which he had earned his masters at Juilliard.
Since then he’s earned praises and awards in both classical music and jazz, building a long career known for versatility, both in the instrument he plays and the music he plays with it. The Eddie Daniels Quartet, with Daniels in clarinet and sax, Alan Pasqua on piano, Darek Oles on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums, will be performing at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel. Tickets are $35, $10 for students. Order tickets by calling 1-800-371-0178 or going online to oberlin.edu/artist-recital-series/.
