Cleveland’s Slovenian heritage gets a special Independence Day weekend salute when accordionist Joey Miskulin joins the Jeff Pecon Orchestra for an afternoon dance party at the SNPJ Farm in Kirtland.
Although Miskulin, now one of the Grand Old Men of Cleveland-style polka, is not a Cleveland native, he’s a native son by adoption: as a teen he met Cleveland polka legend Frankie Yankovic and toured with him for years. Later he moved to Nashville where he’s played with an array of musicians in various styles, including country humorists Riders in the Sky. Pecon has a sterling heritage as well: his father was another legend of Cleveland polka, Johnny Pecon.
They’ll be playing lively music for polka dancing and ballads for waltzing. And to get you fueled for all that dancing, there’ll be plenty of hearty Slovenian-style food available. Gates open at noon; dinner is served at 2pm. Music and dancing from 3-7pm.
