Planning to see the culminating fourth year of Baldwin Wallace University’s student-run Beatles Fest, featuring The Beatles’ “White Album” on Sat 3/29?
There’s no better way to prepare than to be at this convocation at BW’s Gamble Auditorium on Wed 3/19 at 3:10PM to learn “(secrets of the white album)” from Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready.
Following his provocative Vinyl Listening Session on David Bowie presented last Fall, Mulready again sets up a hi-fi turntable and pulls out vintage and brand-new 180 gram vinyl of The Beatles’ “White Album” and other rarities in a 51-minute multi-media experience featuring video, rare photos and little-known factoids behind what many consider to be The Beatles’ finest album and crowning achievement.
Pulling selections from the rare “White (unplugged) Album” bootleg demos recorded at George Harrison’s house, the interactive session will feature games, contests, Cool Cleveland tee-shirt giveaways, backward tapes, and an exploration of key influences on 1968’s “The Beatles,” known as “The White Album,” including the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, LSD, Yoko Ono and Fluxus. White Album Trivia Contest winners will be awarded t-shirts and prizes.
The concept behind Baldwin Wallace University’s Beatles Festival is a simple one: reproduce an entire album of The Beatles, note for note, measure for measure. In execution, this student-organized and performed event has turned into an annual miracle. Because of their access to top musicians, BW’s facilities and rehearsal space, BW students have taken what could be an exercise in nostalgia to an unprecedented professional level.
With a massive rotating flux of musicians able to reproduce every violin, synthesizer, guitar and backward tape trick in The Beatles’ songbook, over the past four years, the students of BW’s Beatles Festival have successfully presented “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Abbey Road,” and “Magical Mystery Tour,” and have now spent the last 12 months preparing to tackle the audacious double-LP “White Album” featuring such classics as “Revolution,” “Birthday,” “Back In The U.S.S.R.,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Blackbird,” and the mysteriously ethereal “Revolution 9.”
“(secrets of the white album)” takes place on Wed 3/19 at 3:10PM in Gamble Auditorium, Kulas Musical Arts Bldg, 96 Front Street, Berea, OH 44017.
