Hey Mavis Hootenanny Wraps 2013 at Peninsula’s G.A.R. Hall

Tue 12/31 @ 6:30 & 10PM

The 2013 Voices in the Valley series at Peninsula’s G.A.R. Hall wraps up on New Year’s Eve with a hootenanny hosted by one of the area’s best Americana groups Hey Mavis.

The group started nearly six years ago around the (now) husband-and-wife team of vocalist Laurie Caner and violinist Ed Caner, both of whom had extensive experience in prior bands. They spent three years as artists in residence at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, where they honed the act.

This year — with the core duo expanded to a quartet with the addition of guitarist Brent Kirby and upright bassist Bryan Thomas — the group released its sophomore album, Honey Man, with a sold-out show at CVNP’s Happy Days Lodge. The 11 diverse tunes on the album are lightly dusted with old-time country flavor, but on the whole, too smart, sophisticated, and even in spots a little jazzy, to pass for front-porch mountain music or the band’s self-dubbed tag “Appalachian Americana.”

Hey Mavis will do two sets, one at 6:30pm for those who like to be home and in bed before the New Year’s Eve craziness, and one at 10 pm for those who like to be part of the craziness. They’ll do a straight set at 6:30; at 10, they’ll invite various friends up to jam.

Tickets for each show are a bargain-priced $15, and you can get both shows for $25.
