’80s new wave had a large streak of gay.
Not only did bands like Erasure, the Pet Shop Boys, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood have openly gay members, but other groups like the Smiths, Wham!, and, Depeche Mode — particularly those with a heavily electronic dance sound popular in nightclubs — had large gay followings.
So DJ Guilila, who’ll be hosting Gay New Wave Night at Now That’s Class, has a plethora of racks to choose from. He’s promising to spin both the obscure and the hits that reliably fill the dance floor over and over.
