It’s the big day for little stores: Record Store Day.
All those big music chains that used to be everywhere vanished as digital downloads took over the world. But many small, independent record stores are surviving by catering to serious music fans.
National Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 to help promote such small stores across the country. Many record labels and bands offer special releases and merch, available only in those stores on that day. And the stores themselves whoop it up with in-store performances, food, artist meet-and-greets, DJs, and other entertainment. It’s a great day to stop in that little record store you’ve been meaning to check out or haven’t visited in a while.
There’s a whole bunch of stores in Northeast Ohio participating — you’d be surprised how many little indie stores we have. You can find a complete list with links at the Record Store Day website. They include Square Records in Akron, My Mind’s Eye in Lakewood, locally owned The Exchange shops throughout the region, and many more.
Over on Waterloo Road, which is home to three record stores — Music Saves, Blue Arrow, and This Way Out — the Beachland Tavern is hosting a free Record Store Day concert at 4:30pm with three local bands: GoldMINES, Extra Medium Pony, and Chin Shoda.
