Cleveland Orchestra at Gordon Square in May

Sat 5/11-Fri 5/17

For west siders who can’t get to Severance Hall, the Cleveland Orchestra is bringing the music to them. From 5/11-17, the orchestra will be in residence in the Gordon Square Arts District in Detroit Shoreway.

The residency will feature a series of performances by different ensembles in local venues, special events to engage kids with the orchestra, and a full-orchestra free concert at St. Colman Catholic Church on th 5/16, followed by a reception with the orchestra, and a children’s concert the following day at St. Colman for kids from local schools.

Various smaller groups of Cleveland Orchestra musicians will play throughout the week at venues like Gypsy Beans & Baking Co., La Sagrada Familia, Stockyard Meats, Cleveland Public Theatre, Battery Park Wine Bar, the St. Augustine Health Campus, the Happy Dog, Sweet Moses, Spice Kitchen + Bar, 78th Street Studios, and Survival Kit Gallery at 78th Street Studios.

In addition, Orchestra members will participate in a soccer game with local kids at the Michael J Zone Recreation; a City Club of Cleveland-sponsored discussion on the role of the arts in neighborhood development will take place at the Reinberger Auditorium band broadcast on 90.3 FM WCPN’s Around Noon; and the Capitol Theater will show a film of a Cleveland Orchestra performance.

All events are free.

The idea sprang from a series of performances by Cleveland Orchestra members at the Happy Dog at 58th and Detroit, begun nearly three years ago. Those “Classical Revolution” evenings led to a partnership with the orchestra to bring Detroit-Shoreway residents to Severance Hall.

More information — including how to get tickets for the St. Colman concert — and a complete schedule of events are available here.
