The respect Tony Urso earned during his years in the Cleveland underground music scene is demonstrated by the fact that bands are emerging from retirement to play benefits for the musician who was diagnosed with cancer last year.
Last month, Columbus-based indie legends Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments headlined a show for him at Now That’s Class. Now Cleveland’s Hucklebuck are doing the same at the Grog Shop. Hucklebuck was known in the early ’90s for their over-the-top satirical shows intended to offend and annoy those who didn’t get the joke. The same could be said for most of the bands Urso played with, a list that included the recklessly unpredictable Sissy, Backmonkeys (once described as “an excuse for onstage drunken revelry”), and his most serious band, ’80s punk rockers Starvation Army. Obnox, Scarcity of Tank, and Fuck You Pay Me are also in on the bill. A $10 donation is suggested.
