Growing up in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans and playing trombone since the age of 6 don’t guarantee you will set out to upend the world of jazz, but Troy Andrews, known to the world as Trombone Shorty, is doing just that. His release Backatown hit #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts for 9 weeks, and his 2011 release, For True, features everyone from Kid Rock to Jeff Beck to Warren Haynes and former band leader Lenny Kravitz.
He’s performed on several episodes of Treme on HBO, and it’s no wonder the San Francisco Chronicle isn’t the only one calling Trombone Shorty “New Orleans’ brightest new star in a generation.”
