Not only the most commercially successful saxman in contemporary jazz, David Sanborn has not only played with everyone from James Brown, Albert King, Little Milton, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Elton John, Gil Evans, and Jack DeJohnette to Paul Schaffer’s band on Late Night With David Letterman, he practically invented the genre of serious but popular jazz.
Another of this year’s jazz stars produced by the great Tommy LiPuma of Cleveland, David Sanborn spoke at his gig of his early influences, including Ray Charles’ sax player Hank Crawford, and tore the roof off the State Theatre in Cleveland on Fri 4/27/12 as part of the 33rd annual Tri-C JazzFest with Joey DeFrancesco on B3 and drummer Jeremy Thomas.
