Representative Dennis Kucinich Responds to Cool Cleveland’s Questions
Super Tuesday, March 6, 2012, will be an important election for Ohio and the country. Not only will Cuyahoga County be electing a new Prosecutor (see Cool Cleveland’s questions to Prosecutor candidates here), but they will also be electing a member to the House of Representatives from the newly created 9th Congressional District, which stretches along Lake Erie from Toledo to Cleveland. Because the new district contains heavily Democratic voters, the primary on March 6 will most likely determine who is elected in November.
Three candidates are in the race: Representative Dennis Kuchinich, Representative Marcy Kaptur, and Graham Veysey. All three have been invited to answer a few questions from Cool Cleveland that we plan to publish prior to the election.
Please use a maximum of 700 words total to answer the following two questions:
Congressional Candidate Dennis Kucinich responds:
Question A: Observers have noted that all three candidates for the new 9th District share many positions and stands on issues. What differentiates you from your two opponents?
My greatest area of difference with my friend from Toledo has been over the funding of the Wars. I led the effort in challenging the Bush Administration’s claims about WMD’s and consistently voted against each and every attempt during the Bush Administration to try to defund the war. The spending for the war has been a major reason for our deteriorating domestic economy. According to the National Priorities Project, the War in Iraq has already cost my district $1,900,000,000 For further information go to www.nationalpriorities.org.
Money spent on war could have otherwise been spent on job creation, rebuilding America’s infrastructure, health care, education and other social and economic needs. My friend from Toledo could have used her position on Appropriations to take on the Bush Administration. Instead, sadly, she acquiesced. I do support the troops – – by bringing them home from unnecessary wars.
I would pursue the following: Make sure of the long-term security of our steel, automotive, aerospace and port businesses and of the workers who serve in them. Secure all government-related jobs in the district from any reductions in force. Continue efforts to gain total funding for the Inner Belt Bridge project. Get a thorough technical evaluation of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant in Port Clinton. The shield building must be fixed or the plant should be closed. Assist the workers at Tsubacki plant in Sandusky, Ohio in their dispute with the corporation. Tackle point source pollution leading to toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie. Extend top-notch congressional constituent service across the entire district.
