Local Artist George Fitzpatrick Shows his Calligraphic-Style Drawings at Bonfoey Gallery

Fri 8/3 @ 5-8PM

Cleveland artist George Fitzpatrick has been creating work for nearly 60 years, since he was a high school student at West Tech with an intense focus on making art.

One of his major focuses since 1974 has been his “word drawings,” works with calligraphic-style designs based on texts of archeological works, ancient literature, and historical art subjects. He’s created more than a thousand such drawings, favoring a paper used by Japanese Buddhist monks to create their prayer scrolls, using a painstaking process that allows for no mistakes. That process imbues the works with meditative feel.

These works were displayed in New York in 1992 and earned national attention, but he hasn’t had an exhibition of them in Cleveland in more than 20 years. Now they’ll be on view at the Bonfoey Gallery downtown in George Fitzpatrick: Twenty-Four Drawings. There’ll be an artist reception Fri 8/3 @ 5-8pm. Fitzpatrick will talk about his work at the gallery Sat 8/11 @ 10:30am.

The show remains on view through Sat 9/1.
