The intimate gallery space at Deep Dive Art Projects in the Waterloo Arts District is perfectly suited for viewing exhibits featuring smaller works and those that invite extended perusing: exhibits such as Wendy Partridge’s Place in the World: letterpress books and broadsides, which opens Friday June 4.
Partridge, who is a book artist, painting conservator and letterpress printer working out of Zygote Press, has spent seven years working on a series of broadsides called Artists on Art, centered on quotes from artists about making their work. She sets wood or lead type by hand and creates images via pressure prints and collagraphs. As she worked she found that the quotes, rather than expressing conflict and self-doubt, in fact celebrated the creative process. She also found herself increasing drawn to women artists, such as her most recent featuring Niki de Saint Phalle, Lenore Tawney, and Mickalene Thomas.
Along with the broadsides, the exhibit at Deep Dive will include artist books with different constructions and printing methods that explore the relationship between humans and nature.
The show opens during Walk All Over Waterloo, 5-8pm, Friday June 4, and will be on view through Saturday July 31. Contact Deep Dive Art Projects to make an appointment for a leisurely viewing.
