The Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project has really gotten into high gear with its latest series of concerts reflected its name: artists who explore the outer edges of music and sound.
This week’s concert will be headlined by east coast (Philadelphia/Baltimore) duo LIGAMENT, which features vocalist Anika Kildegaard and double bassist Will Yager who use other sounds. They create and commission work for their instrumentation, using both standard musical elements and incorporating non-standard sounds (an electric toothbrush, high heels) to expand sonic possibilities. In Cleveland, they’ll offers some news works including Nick Bentz’s “please continue” which, they say, “examines the relationship between psychedelics and American politics from the 80s to today;” Ruby Fulton’s “and if not, why not” exploring “the isolating effects of interstate migration on new mothers in early 20th century America;” and James Dillon’s “A Roaring Flame,” described as “a glossolalic summoning, a primordial and macabre incantation.” They’ll also play new works by Amy Beth Kirsten and Katherine Balch.
Also on the bill is Cleveland’s Ensemble Mercury featuring siblings Ellie Glorioso (cello) and McKenna Glorioso (violin). Ellie is also a composer/educator who has a cello studio called The Cello Collective on Larchmere. McKenna Glorioso is a musician/educator who founded and managed Ensemble Mercury, performs with the Akron Symphony and teaches at The Music Settlement.
The concert takes place at Convivium 33 in AsiaTown. Admission is $15 but they emphasize that no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
