Music has always been part of movements for peace, freedom, equality and social justice. Most people instantly recognize “We Shall overcome” as an anthem for the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, but protest music goes back centuries before that.
The local nonprofit Roots of American Music, which uses music to teach about other subjects, including history and civic affairs, is hosting “Songs of Freedom, Hope & Peace,” taking place at Trinity Cathedral across from Cleveland State University.
It will feature the gospel tunes, protest songs and the anthems that kept people fighting for their rights. “We Shall overcome,” originally a gospel tune, qualifies as all three.
The Sam Hooper Group, a rock/blues/R&B ensemble led by guitarist Sam Hooper, will be providing the music with vocals provided by Cleveland actress/singer/educator Angela Winborn, whose background includes performances at theaters such as the Cleveland Play House, Great Lakes Theater and Karamu.
