Back in the late ’60s, when the rock music world blew wide open to a variety of influences, there was a small, select group of bands that looked toward country roots, especially the lively genre called Western swing. Among them were Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen and Asleep at the Wheel.
Formed in West Virginia in 1970, and based for most of its still-extant lifespan in Austin, Texas, Ray Benson’s Asleep at the Wheel had no big hits but introduced a lot of rock fans to the music of Western swing pioneers like Bob Wills. Last year, they released yet another tribute to their main influence called Still The King: Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. On it they were joined by an array of guest performers including Lyle Lovett, the Avett Brothers, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley and the Del McCoury Band.
They’ll be going it alone — but sure to tuck some Bob Wills into their set — when they’re back in town to play the Kent Stage where they’re sure to have people on their feet. Tickets are $38, $46 for gold circle.
