“The Hobbit” Comes Alive at Ohio Shakespeare Festival

Thu 10/2-Sun 10/26

Listen up, all you Tolkien fans of all ages. The Akron-based Ohio Shakespeare Festival, which does a lot more than just Shakespeare, has something you’re going to love. It’s about to open its production of The Hobbit, based on the JRR Tolkien noel, adapted for the stage by Patricia Gray.

This production, directed by Tess Burler, will feature the actor/musicians from The Rude Sea, last seen in OSF’s 2024 Wizard of Oz. There will be lots of fantasy and sword play (directed by Ryan Zarecki) as the cast tells the beloved story of Hobbit Balbo Baggins and his encounter with the wizard Gandalf, leading him on an adventure involving dwarves, trolls, goblins, magic rings and a ghastly dragon. The production incorporates references to the Peter Jackson-directed Hobbit films.

Thursday October 2 is preview night, with regular performances starting October 3; Saturday October 11 is free student night. And Saturday October 18 is Hallow’s Eve in Hobbiton. Evening performances will start at 7:30 to cater to younger audiences; matinees start at 2pm. The play is performed at Akron’s Greystone Hall. Go here for tickets.
