Cain Park Opens “Break Beat Play,” “Hype Man”

Fri 7/12-Sun 7/21

After cutting back the number of productions, this summer’s Cain Park theater season is offering a feast of plays — four in all.

The third opens this weekend when the cast of Idris Goodwin’s 2019 Hype Man: A Break Beat Play takes the stage. It revolves around a hip-hop trio, consisting of a rapper, beat maker and hype man — a rapper’s sidekick/backing vocalist whose main job is to rev up the audience. Their music is starting to take off but they’re dealing with internal conflicts about how to use their music to address a police shooting.  It’s the debut northeast Ohio performance of the script. The Detroit-born, Chicago-educated Goodwin, who has written a dozen other plays including two others he refers to as “break beat plays,” is currently the artistic director of Seattle Children’s Theater.

The play runs for two weeks through Sunday July 21. Get tickets here.
